Hubs of Inland Waterways

The historical roots of Rhenus go back to the following inland waterways: the rivers Rhine and Main. The logistics specialist, which was founded in Frankfurt/Main in 1912, expanded its coverage significantly with many new branches in its early years and not only offered transport operations, but also transhipment logistics services. As a result of the growing economic links between individual regions and national states, the network of inland waterway terminals operated by Rhenus has grown constantly. This not only involves the rivers Rhine, Main, Neckar and Danube, but also the canal network, which creates time and cost-saving links between the natural rivers.

The inland waterway ports and the transhipment services performed there are a permanent feature of many domestic and international transport chains. Containers, which have become increasingly important for break bulk cargo and even bulk commodities, have significantly changed the equipment and the efficiency of the inland port facilities in a similar way to maritime shipping. Contargo is the Rhenus company that organises all these business operations. But speed and security have to be guaranteed beyond just handling containers in order to ensure that the conventional loading and unloading of vessels takes place in line with modern standards and in cost-effective conditions.

Inland waterway ports as the mainstay of goods traffic

The Rhenus Group is geared and well-equipped to handle multi-modal traffic. If we are to guarantee smooth supply chain management operations, we must have the relevant infrastructure and superstructure at our inland waterway terminals. The cranes and conveyor belts there enable us to quickly and carefully tranship raw materials, semi-finished products or industrial and consumer goods between the different modes of transport. To provide just-in-time deliveries for reliable supplies at factories, it is necessary to have intermediate storage for the production items for a particular time. We are happy to make our port areas available for this requirement.

Inland waterway ports are some of the mainstays for goods traffic. But sometimes they are the starting and finishing point of a transport chain. Regardless of what is being transported, we can organise all the pick-up and final delivery runs for you and make use of trucks, rail services, inland waterway vessels – and maritime shipping too if the distances are greater.
