Inland Waterway Transport

Many major cities are inseparably linked to the rivers, on the banks of which they were founded. Inland waterway transport and the exchange of goods associated with it played and still play an extremely important role for the economic development of many communities and regions. Many goods and raw materials make their way along inland waterways, which have not yet reached their full capacity by any stretch of the imagination. The excellent environmental credentials, the high safety standards for shipments and the large carrying capacity of the vessels are just some of the outstanding features of this long-standing mode of transport.

The roots of Rhenus’ history, which goes back to 1912, lie in inland waterway transport and we have continually expanded our services in this field in conjunction with our customers and adapted them to the latest technology. Many specialist company units within the Rhenus Group are available to assist you with a broad range of services related to inland waterway transport.

All the facets of inland waterway shipping

Rhenus operates its own fleet of motorised cargo vessels and also has access to additional shipping space that can be planned in a flexible manner. We use both to transport your products quickly and efficiently in line with your wishes. We can also ensure that other inland waterway vessels are supplied with fuel and lubricants from our bunker boats. Because of our many years of experience in this business, we can handle containers, bulk commodities, break bulk cargo, suction goods, bulk solids, bulk materials and other goods and project loads with the necessary sector expertise for you. By making use of the complete Rhenus network, we can organise the full inland waterway transport chain, including the pick-up and final delivery runs, using road and rail services alongside the inland waterways.

Compact network of branches

Our compact network of branches includes many inland waterway terminals on the most important rivers in continental Europe, e.g. the Rhine, Main and Danube; customers can use them to tranship and store goods too. They also serve as the starting and finishing points for the transport services that we organise and provide on inland waterways. The Rhenus inland waterway services are also closely linked to the short-sea shipping handled by coastal vessels, which often make their way far inland.
