The businesses operated by Rhenus Alpina AG experienced gratifying growth in financial year 2016. The Rhenus Group’s Swiss companies achieved sales of CHF 302 million (2015: CHF 264 million).
Rhenus Alpina AG lifted sales in Switzerland by an impressive 14 percent to CHF 302 million in 2016 (2015: CHF 264 million). The increase in revenue was due mainly to the integration of the general cargo companies MAT Transport AG and Bonafide AG. Despite the still-subdued market trend and the difficult exchange rate situation for the Swiss export industry, the business trend at Rhenus showed a slight improvement overall. The global Rhenus Group employs 1,353 people in Switzerland, just over 100 more than in the previous year.
In a market environment characterized by the strength of the Swiss franc, Rhenus Contract Logistics AG achieved solid capacity utilization at its logistics centres and a slight overall improvement in sales in 2016 thanks to its broadly diversified business.
Rhenus Freight Logistics AG held business volumes steady in valuables logistics and in the air segment (general cargo) even posted an improvement in 2016. In a continuation of the trend seen in 2015, eastern and tanker freight remained under pressure and showed a decline. The division's necessary structural adjustment progressed following the acquisition and integration of MAT Transporte AG on 1 July 2016.
Cargologic AG was able to capitalize on the stabilizing trend in the air freight market and tranship a slightly higher volume of goods in its position as the Swiss market leader in air freight handling. This was driven both by increases attributable to existing airline customers and by the company gaining Panalpina, Switzerland's largest air freight forwarding company, as a new key account. In addition, Cargologic improved the efficiency of central processes by continuing to invest in its own transhipment hub as well as through increasing digitalization.
Rhenus Port Logistics AG was able to fully utilize its storage capacities, including the silo in Vallorbe (Canton of Vaud) acquired at the beginning of the year, and to increase its transhipment and storage rates in the agriculture sector in 2016. The new "Track ballast" business also performed well.
Due to the sharp variation in water levels on the Rhine, Contargo recorded fluctuating transport volumes on its transport systems over the course of the year. The expanded rail services for Swiss imports and exports in the second half of the year enabled Contargo to post a significant increase in volumes overall. The weakness of the euro continues to put pressure on margins and spurs the company on in its efforts to digitalize the business further.
