Discover and Develop Yourself – Rhenus Trainees Share Their Traineeship Experiences

In addition to an Asian trainee program, Rhenus Air & Ocean offers a European trainee program since 2016. It prepares young people for a wide variety of responsible positions within our organization. One of the reasons why graduates choose this program is the regular rotation between different departments around the world.

Rianne Loerakker from the Netherlands has recently completed her trainee program and is now starting as a Project Manager in the Dutch Business Process Support Team. She says, "When I completed my Bachelor's degree in Business Studies, I did not know exactly which activities within the logistics field suited me. The Management Trainee Program Air & Ocean allowed me to discover this and develop myself at the same time."

Tarek Khatib, who started the trainee program in Belgium and now works as an Inside Sales Officer looks back on a completed trainee program: "The program was a perfect step for me to take after graduation as I was still unsure about what career path I should take. The program gives you a chance to experience more than one department within the organization and provides flexibility to do both managerial and sales-related tasks." He is also particularly interested in the logistics business: "In my opinion, when you understand the logistics business, you understand the world, because you learn about trade, finance, politics and government policies that all come together to shape the way you design your future business strategy."

The program consists of four trainee placements. Each placement lasts six months. At first, each trainee gets to know the core business of airfreight and ocean freight. Sales and an international station are an integral part of the program too. Nevertheless, the program allows trainees to be flexible so that they can adapt it to their interests and skills. The most exciting experience for Rianne was working on different locations around the globe: "by changing departments every six months, I got to know Rhenus and expanded my network. Besides, I constantly got new challenges and training courses offered. This alternation appealed to me very much, but it was also the biggest challenge at the same time. You have to open up, namely to the big unknown every time: new department, new people and new work. Due to the fact that the employees at Rhenus Air & Ocean are friendly, open and transparent, it gave me the feeling that I was not alone in this big challenge." As for Tarek, he has learned "that you are the creator of your luck and that if you want something, go knock on the door and get it – don't wait for it to fall into your lap."

Tarek Khatib finished his traineeship in 2020 as well.

In addition to learning "on-the-job", our trainees also take part in various specialist and soft skills training courses. For example, on customs issues, communication and conflict situations. Nevertheless, there are individual challenges for everyone, as Rianne and Tarek describe: For Rianne, it is stepping out of her comfort zone now and then. She kept developing herself, not only in the work area but also on a personal level. She could not have imagined a better first job, and she advises all new trainees: "Don't be afraid to ask questions, there are no stupid questions." For Tarek, the challenge was the size of the organization: "Since Rhenus is a huge organization, one of the biggest challenges was to build a good communication with my colleagues on a local and an international level." Rhenus' open-door policy helped him a lot: "You can talk to the regional or global CEO, and they are always willing to help or answer your questions." 

In addition to Rianne and Tarek, another four trainees have completed their trainee program this year and successfully started in their new positions: Fotios Garefalakis (Logistics Optimization Manager, CN), Pablo Guido (Project Manager Global Product, GER), Lukas Jochums (Controller, GER) and Philipp Krupka (A&O Roll Out Manager, GER).
