The Rhenus Group signed an agreement to purchase the inland waterways activities of Compagnie Française de Navigation Rhénane (CFNR) on May 21, 2015. The acquisition of the units by Rhenus subsidiary Rhenus Transport SAS is subject to approval by competition authorities.
The shipping company CFNR is based in Strasbourg and specializes in inland waterway transport on the Rhine and its tributaries. It also has subsidiaries on the Rhine, the Moselle and on the canals of northern France, where it has sites in Thionville, Dunkirk, Strasbourg, Dordrecht, Kehl, Ludwigshafen and Antwerp among others. The company, which was founded in 1924, provides services for all parts of the supply chain for bulk goods and heavy cargo, from transshipment and storage to shipping, freight forwarding and sea and road transport.
“With this acquisition, we are aiming to strengthen our business activities in northern and eastern France and along the Rhine and Moselle,” explains Thomas Maassen, CEO of Rhenus Port Logistics. “Because a major part of the transport we organize includes French dry cargo shipments to neighboring European countries, CFNR shipping activities complement Rhenus Transport’s existing traffic.”
“We are delighted to have found in Rhenus a partner who will continue our shipping tradition and offer our employees a long-term perspective,” Patrice Haegy, spokesman for CFNR’s management board, comments.
In February 2015, the Rhenus Group took over a subsidiary of CFNR, the Serbian terminal operator and inland waterway transport logisticians CFND, to expand its operations in the Danube region.
The Rhenus Group provides logistics services around the globe and has annual turnover amounting to EUR 4.2 billion. Rhenus employs over 25,000 people at more than 460 locations worldwide. The Rhenus business areas – Contract Logistics, Freight Logistics and Port Logistics – manage complex supply chains and provide a wealth of innovative value-added services.
