Senior Customs Declarant

Rhenus Logistics UK are looking to recruit two Senior Customs Declarant to join our teams in Manchester. The successful applicants will work as part of a team with Customs Declarants to submit and process customs entries and ensuring that shipments meet all applicable laws to facilitate the import and export of goods on Air, Sea and Road shipments. You will act between the customer and Customs and act as a point of reference and answer queries and support Junior Customs Declarants. You will determine and track duties and taxes payable and process payments on behalf of clients.

Job Role:

Customs Declarant to submit and process customs entries and ensuring that shipments meet all applicable laws to facilitate the import and export of goods on Air, Sea and Road shipments. Act between the Customer and Customs, support Junior Customs Declarants. Determine and track duties and taxes payable and process payments on behalf of clients.

Main Duties:

  • Prepare and process import, export, NCTS - transit and excise customs entries according to Customs regulations, laws, or procedures using our Customs software ASM Sequoia.
  • Monitor pending clearances.
  • Train Junior Customs Declarant.
  • Ensure all shipment paperwork received is reviewed and all documentation has been provided to ensure Customs clearances are compliant in accordance with Customs and Rhenus regulations.
  • Classify goods according to UK Customs tariff.
  • Deal with general enquiries from customers concerning all areas relating to customs procedures, i.e. tariff classifications, duty rates, license and any other documentation requirements.
  • Process of duty and tax refund requests.
  • Ensure proper use of deferment accounts.
  • Prepare and process sales invoices / purchase invoices as required.
  • Maintain current knowledge of customs legislation, political/commercial documentation and the HMRC tariff.
  • Ensure all customs activities meet AEO Customs requirements and trade compliance.

Customs Clearance Supervisor

Supervising the department with an emphasis on leading, motivating, coaching and developing the team of Junior and Senior Customs Declarants. Work as part of a team with Customs Declarants to submit and process customs entries and ensuring that shipments meet all applicable laws to facilitate the import and export of goods on Air, Sea and Road shipments. Act between the customer and Customs and act as a point of reference and answer queries and support Senior and Junior Customs Declarants.

Main Duties:

  • Coordination of processing of customs data to ensure it is delivered smoothly and seamlessly.
  • Daily task coordination and team management.
  • Providing outstanding customer service and communication.
  • Working with internal and external partners to resolve deficiencies.
  • Provide analysis data and documentation as evidence for internal and external audits.  
  • Timely follow up of open issues, including clearance of undischarged T1 documents and handling of outstanding preference documents.     
  • Maintain current knowledge of customs legislation, political/commercial documentation and the HMRC tariff.
  • Providing support, assistance and direction to the team members.   
  • Preparing reports and metrics for both internal and external purposes.
  • Training of client and broker personnel involved with customs operations.
  • Providing regular status input to Operations Manager.
  • Maintain AEO status by ensuring that customs procedures managed by team are documented and follows.
  • Apply for customs authorisations
  • Other duties as assigned by Customs Manager.

  • Trade Qualification (BIFA) in Customs Procedures an advantage.
  • Must be computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft packages and relative software including Destin8/CNS Compass.
  • A good level of numeracy and literacy.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and to be able to work under pressure.     
  • Have proven, excellent customer service skills.
  • Have a methodical and organized approach to work with the ability to think ahead and prioritise tasks.
  • The successful applicant will ideally be able to quickly respond effectively to changing demands and be able to apply good problem solving skills.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the whole purchase ledger process, from posting invoices, making payments and reconciliations.
