Rhenus Scharrer demonstrated its readiness for action and flexibility in ensuring that it was possible to maintain supplies of materials to the Benteler Steel/Tube pipe factory in Dinslaken in June despite the damage caused by the storm known as “Ela”. By using additional trucks and establishing an alternative railway link, the logistics services provider was able to override the loss of the regular transport route in the western part of Germany.
“Normally railway transport services from our own steel works in Lingen provide the primary materials for our two pipe factories in Dinslaken and Paderborn-Schloss Neuhaus. But the Lingen – Dinslaken railway line was out of action for several days after the storm. It would have been impossible to continue production without any fresh supplies once our back-up stocks had been used up,” says Tobias Liebelt, Supply Chain Manager at Benteler Steel/Tube. “Faced with this situation, we approached the Rhenus Group; it has often helped us with logistics tasks needing to be resolved at short notice in the past.”
Rhenus Scharrer drew up an action plan for this task. It was able to maintain the production supplies at the Benteler factory in Dinslaken by using routes, transport and handling equipment and logistics experts specialising in production supplies in a flexible manner. For example, the company organised the flat wagons required as truck trailers within a very short time. Road services alone were inadequate to maintain the regular cycle times for deliveries of the primary materials; the factory there requires 1,400 tonnes for production purposes every day.
The Rhenus company established a second starting point for transport services to Dinslaken at a railway station in Hamm. Rhenus has its own terminal there and was able to make available powerful crane equipment at short notice, for example. “In addition to restoring the flow of materials with the transport services, there was another challenge: achieving the correct sequence for the goods. By maintaining close contact with the customer, we regularly coordinated matters to ensure that we loaded the means of transport and managed their arrival at the factory in such a way that it was possible to continue production at Benteler without any interruptions,” says Kay Vosmerbäumer, Managing Director of Rhenus Scharrer, summarising the operations.
“Rhenus supported us with remarkable commitment and expertise in the face of extraordinary circumstances. As a result, we were able to produce the pipes on order for our customers in Europe and beyond without any disruption,” says Tobias Liebelt.
The Rhenus Group provides logistics services around the globe and has annual turnover amounting to EUR 4 billion. Rhenus employs over 24,000 people at more than 350 locations worldwide.
