Rhenus Opens New Logistics Centre in Frankfurt

The Rhenus group put into service its newly constructed logistics centre Frankfurt (Main-Kinzig) on Friday. Built on a plot measuring 41,000 square metres, the multi-user warehouse has more than 21,000 square metres of covered storage space and is equipped with 22 gates. The logistics centre has been constructed in line with the highest ecological standards and saves up to 15 percent in heating costs in comparison with conventional warehouses.

12,000 pallets were moved from the previous Rhenus business centre on Gutleutstrasse to the district of Linsengericht within just three months. As many as 35,000 pallets can be stored at the new logistics warehouse because the building is fully equipped with shelves. The logistics warehouse is twelve metres high and is protected against any damage from the elements or break-ins through its heating, video monitoring and alarm systems.

“Our logistics expertise proved to be highly beneficial once again during the move. Our efforts paid off in a very clear manner. The new business centre meets the latest requirements in the logistics sector and has been equipped to meet our customers’ needs,” says Kai Fischbach, a member of the Contract Logistics Germany management team, summarising the advantages on the sidelines of the ceremony. “We were also persuaded by the location in the Frankfurt/Rhine/Main metropolitan region and the excellent transport connections with a direct link to the A66 motorway.” During the opening ceremony on 16 November, Michael Brockhaus, a Member of the Rhenus Board, handed over the symbolic key to Martin Lohmeier, the branch manager at the site.

The new logistics centre is particularly designed to save energy. The heating system can either be operated with wood pellets or wood chips and this reduces the heating costs considerably. During the building work, extensive work was carried out to provide green areas and noise protection. An application has been made with the German Sustainable Building Council to gain the silver award for the logistics centre, which has been built in a sustainable manner.

In addition to storing fast moving consumer goods and industrial items, the logistics centre also serves as a high-security warehouse for air freight consignments and provides value added services like labelling.

The complete building is equipped with a special plastic film so that it is even possible to store materials that pose a threat to water supplies (hazard class 2). One part of the building has also been designed in such a way that it is possible to insert a refrigeration system in order to be able to store temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical and health care products.
