Rhenus holds naming ceremony for the first European inland waterway vessel with innovative flex tunnel technology

Rhenus PartnerShip, the specialist for inland waterway shipping, held the naming ceremony for the “Rhenus Duisburg” motor vessel at the port of Duisburg on 14 August. The ship is equipped with the newly developed flex tunnel technology and “father/son” engines. The motorised barge combinations, “Rhenus Dillingen” and “Rhenus Thionville”, were also welcomed into the Rhenus PartnerShip fleet.

The MS “Rhenus Duisburg”, which was constructed in Romania and fully equipped in the Netherlands, has a smooth stern with a hydraulically extendible flex tunnel. This innovation, which was developed by the Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems in Duisburg, has been installed on board an inland waterway vessel for the first time in Europe in order to significantly increase efficiency levels, particularly when the vessel is operating in shallow waters.

“As an important partner of industry, we offer our customers environmentally-friendly, safe and cost-effective means of transport. We pay particular attention to continually making use of new developments in technical equipment, “says Dr. Wolfgang Hönemann, Managing Director of Rhenus PartnerShip.

The MS “Rhenus Duisburg” will in future be used as a motorised barge combination to supply coal to a power station; the unit will operate between the seaports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam and the unloading port in Lünen. The vessel, which is 110 metres long and 11.45 metres wide, has a draught of 3.20 metres and a payload capacity of 2,900 tonnes.

The motor vessel is powered by a modern “father/son” engine arrangement. The powerful “father” engines, each developing 1,500 bhp, are used for fully laden trips up the Rhine with three dumb barges, while the “son” engines each producing 500 bhp operate on canals and empty runs downstream. “The advantage of the “father/son” power train system is that we can always guarantee the best possible consumption and emission levels when on the move,” said Dr. Wolfgang Hönemann.

Two other motorised barge combinations were also named during the ceremony; they have been part of the Rhenus fleet since July 2015. The “Rhenus Dillingen” and “Rhenus Thionville” are both 172 metres long, 11.45 metres wide and have a draught of 3.60 metres. The payload capacity of each is approx. 5,000 tonnes. This corresponds to the amount that 200 trucks can transport. The motorised barge combinations are being used to transport coal on the rivers Rhine, Mosel and Saar.

Overall, Rhenus PartnerShip has 70 of its own inland waterway vessels and also uses a number of chartered motorised barge combinations. The Rhenus subsidiary transports approx. 25 million tonnes of goods per annum, including bulk commodities, project loads and containers.
