Rhenus sets up a new pharmaceutical company

The Rhenus Group established a new company known as Rhenus Pharma Service in May 2015 in order to make the best use of its opportunities as one of the leading logistics partners for the pharmaceutical industry. The new company pools the pharmaceutical logistics activities of existing Rhenus business sites in Germany. Rhenus is currently building another business centre for this sector in Rodgau near Frankfurt/Main.

'There are specific requirements and legal stipulations within the pharmaceutical sector to guarantee supplies of medication. For any logistics services provider, this means that safety, quality and transparency have to be guaranteed along the complete logistics chain at all times,” says Christiane Schütz, Managing Director of Rhenus Pharma Service, explaining the priorities. “We can meet the high standards even better by pooling our capacities within the new company and continuing to expand our portfolio that is specifically designed for this sector.”

Rhenus Pharma Service will act as the logistics partner for medication and medical products along the complete supply chain. Rhenus Pharma Service provides many services ranging from supplying production sites with active ingredients and additives to distributing supplies to wholesalers, chemists and hospitals and finished medical products to patients.

Rhenus not only has eight pharmaceutical business sites in Germany, but others working for the health care sector in neighbouring European countries too. The Rhenus subsidiary uses a common quality assurance system and an accredited warehouse management system in order to guarantee the quality and safety of its operations. All the branches have been audited and certified according to the GxP standards relevant to this sector. Strict regulations govern pharmaceutical warehouses, which have temperature-managed sections with different temperature zones; they ensure that the products are protected from any contamination by other substances, atmospheric humidity, pests and any unauthorised access.

Rhenus Pharma Service has a manufacturing permit in the field of secondary packaging (GMP) and a pharmaceutical wholesaler’s permit for Germany.

Rhenus Pharma Service will continue along its pathway of growth. Rhenus is currently building a new pharmaceutical logistics centre in Rodgau near Frankfurt/Main and it will open in the spring of 2016. Rhenus is also in the process of expanding the Berlin North business site so that it can provide additional storage space and services.
